Riley Hospital for Children introduced an innovative new therapy that has been created to help therapists change the way they help children with Cerebral Palsy. A new Robotics center opened earlier this year, which utilizes interactive robots and supplementary equipment to “retrain” the brain and significantly improve motor function skills. Computer games and images are used during robotic rehabilitation to keep the children engaged in their therapy.

The Center incorporates the use of two robots types – one for upper-body extremity (arms, hands, etc.) and the other for lower-extremity therapy. Various interactive activities prompt the child to perform arm or leg exercise. If movement does not occur, the robot then directs the child’s arm or leg. If the child has the ability to initiate movement, the robot provides adjustable levels of support and assistance to ensure proper movement.

Preliminary studies show a significant improvement in function for the children involved in the robotic rehabilitation program. It is not anticipated that robotic therapy will completely replace all means of traditional therapy, but it is expected to be a useful tool for therapists in aiding children with Cerebral Palsy.

There is great hope that this has tremendous potential to aid children for increased independence in their daily life.
