Diagnostic and Treatment Clinics - Service Description History The first Cerebral Palsy Treatment Center in Indiana was founded in 1935 and was located in the Rotary Building on the grounds of Indiana University Medical Center. Although the program moved from that facility to Methodist Hospital in the 1980's, it remains the oldest continuously operating cerebral palsy clinic in the country. In 1992, United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Indiana decided to expand its support of multi-disciplinary diagnostic services for people with cerebral palsy by soliciting requests for service contracts from other medical facilities. From 1993 until 2005, UCPAGI subsidized the cost of non-reimbursable clinic expenses (for example, social work and dietary) at cerebral palsy clinics at Methodist, Riley and St. Vincent’s Children’s Hospitals. In 1997, in recognition of research indicating a need for health care professionals who understand the changing needs of those who are aging with cerebral palsy, a monthly clinic for adults was established at Crossroads Rehabilitation Center. In 2006, contract agreements were revised to limit support to provision of materials for clients and families. UCPAGI and the clinics also meet annually to share research information and to discuss systemic issues related to health care for individuals with cerebral palsy. Services Each clinic provides comprehensive and continuing diagnostic and treatment services for people with cerebral palsy. Services include evaluations of speech, hearing, mobility, nutrition, rehabilitation needs and general health. A physiatrist (a medical doctor specializing in rehabilitation) or developmental pediatrician at each clinic assists patients in determining their need for adaptive equipment (braces, wheelchairs, etc.) and treatment. Staff of each clinic also assist in coordinating the health care needs of each individual with other areas of their health and welfare - school, work, etc. - and with generic health care providers. Staff of UCPAGI is consulted for additional assistance and/or information. Related Outcome People served by UCPAGI will have the best possible health from caring, well-trained professionals.
